Italian MEP and Lega leader Silvia Sardone He filmed a woman in a full-face veil pushing a pram in the street and reproached her for having her face completely covered.. According to Il Giornale, Sardone He reminded him that in Italy you cannot drive with your face covered in a way that prevents identification., while the woman replied that she was free to dress like that. The video, posted online, has now resulted in a complaint being filed against the MEP with the Milan prosecutor's office.

Sardone is one of the Lega's most active voices on social media against what he defines as the Islamisation of Italy. Often She publishes videos on the street, in neighbourhoods with a strong Muslim presence, where she denounces the full-face veil, the separation between men and women, polygamy and forced marriages.. In one of these videos, addressing a Muslim man directly, he summed up his message with a forceful phrase: “Women in Italy are free. No to the submissive woman, no to the imposition of the Islamic veil, no to polygamy, no to forced marriages. If you don't like it, you can leave.”.

«Do you know what you have to do? Go to Islamabad.»

In the video that prompted the complaint, Sardone addresses a woman in a burqa she encounters in the street and says, “I imagine someone is forcing you.” The woman replies, “I am freer than you.” The MEP insists: “In Italy you shouldn't go about the street completely veiled, and I'm sorry for your daughter, who will probably grow up veiled like you.”. Then he asks her: “Can you lift the veil? Why can't you do it?”. The woman replies that she is free to wear it, but Sardone replies: “No, not in Italy”. And he ends with a sentence that has stoked the controversy even further: “Do you know what you have to do? Go to Islamabad.”.

The complaint against Sardone has been filed by various representatives and organisations of the Italian Islamic community. They ask the Milan public prosecutor's office to assess whether the video could amount to harassment, defamation, breach of honour, religious discrimination and invasion of privacy, especially since the woman was filmed in the street with a minor beside her.

The complainants maintain that Sardone did not limit himself to political criticism, but publicly exposed a private woman, confronted her despite her refusal to be recorded, and linked her dress to submission and Islam. Sardone, by contrast, interprets it as an attempt at political intimidation. She claims that some “Islamists” want to take her to court to silence her and to curb her denunciations of the full-face veil, the subjugation of women and the Islamisation of Italy.“They will not succeed in putting the veil on me, neither on my head nor in my mouth.”, he replied.
