La mobilització política de les comunitats musulmanes dels Estats Units tindrà un aparador al Canadà. Segons informa RAIR Foundation USA, la convenció anual de l’Associació Musulmana Universal d’Amèrica (UMAA) preveu celebrar el 10 d’octubre una jornada de formació al Hilton Toronto Markham, a Ontario. El títol de la sessió resumeix el recorregut que proposa: passar de la mesquita a l’ajuntament. Aquesta activitat forma part d’una trobada molt més àmplia que porta per lema “El següent capítol: de la identitat a l’impacte”.

De la identitat religiosa a la influència política

UMAA no amaga que vol oferir als musulmans una plataforma per avançar objectius polítics, socials, econòmics i religiosos. El plantejament és clar: transformar la cohesió religiosa de la comunitat en una major capacitat d’influència social i política. En aquest esquema, la mesquita deixa de ser només un lloc de culte i passa a funcionar també com a punt de trobada, socialització i organització des d’on es pot projectar influència cap a fora. El llenguatge és amable, però la direcció és construir una estructura capaç de traslladar interessos islàmics al terreny electoral i institucional.

Aquesta projecció institucional no parteix de zero. Als Estats Units, organitzacions musulmanes com CAIR fa anys que treballen per augmentar la representació política de la comunitat i convertir-la en una força electoral estable. Segons les xifres que recull RAIR, l’agost de 2026 ja hi havia 255 càrrecs electes musulmans repartits per 26 estats, i la mateixa organització projectava que més d’un miler de musulmans es presentarien a eleccions el 2028. La convenció de Markham serveix, en aquest context, per exportar al Canadà una experiència que als Estats Units ja ha produït alcaldes, legisladors estatals i estructures dedicades a seleccionar, formar i donar suport a candidats musulmans.

Com guanyar eleccions i arribar al poder

La sessió no es presenta només com una conversa sobre representació. La informació promocional s’adreça explícitament a possibles candidats musulmans a les eleccions. Preveu parlar de qüestions pràctiques com fer campanya, trucar porta a porta i afrontar l’hostilitat que pot trobar un musulmà que decideixi presentar-se a unes eleccions. UMAA resumeix l’ambició del projecte amb una frase significativa: «l’onada no està arribant, ja és aquí».

Els encarregats d’explicar aquest recorregut no són teòrics, sinó musulmans amb càrrecs polítics com Abdullah Hammoud, alcalde de Dearborn; Alabas Farhat, membre de la Cambra de Representants de Michigan o Akbar Ali, legislador de Geòrgia. La proposta consisteix a convertir l’experiència d’aquestes persones en un model replicable. No es tracta només d’animar la comunitat a votar, sinó de formar persones perquè siguin elles mateixes candidates i acabin ocupant càrrecs electes. D’aquesta manera, l’islam portarà les seves demandes directament al centre de la política institucional del Canadà.
