Feminist strike in Austria to defend the Islamic veil for children under 14

Àustria ha començat el curs escolar amb una nova prohibició del vel islàmic per a les alumnes menors de 14 anys. Segons informa ORF, la norma impedeix portar a les escoles públiques i privades peces que cobreixin el cap «segons les tradicions islàmiques» i preveu, després d’un procés d’advertiments i reunions amb les famílies, multes d’entre 150 i 800 euros. Vaga el 9 d’octubre per defensar el vel

La resposta més visible arribarà el 9 d’octubre, quan diverses organitzacions juvenils han convocat una vaga escolar contra la prohibició del vel. Entre els convocants hi ha la Sozialistische Jugend (SJ) i els Rote Falken, vinculats al Partit Socialdemòcrata (SPÖ), juntament amb organitzacions juvenils comunistes, el moviment estudiantil Schule brennt i l’Aktion Kritischer Schüler_innen, també pròxima als socialdemòcrates. La protesta es farà a la plaça dels Drets Humans de Viena i els organitzadors anuncien que protestaran no només contra la prohibició del vel, sinó també contra el que defineixen com a «racisme, sexisme i militarització a les escoles».

Els musulmans reivindiquen el vel com a “autodeterminació religiosa”

La Comunitat Islàmica d’Àustria (IGGÖ) considera que la prohibició assenyala específicament les alumnes musulmanes i defensa que l’Estat hauria de reforçar la capacitat de decisió de les joves en lloc de prohibir-los una peça de roba. El president de l’IGGÖ ha afirmat que portar vel pot ser una expressió religiosa escollida lliurement. La mateixa organització ja havia xocat amb el govern l’estiu de 2025, quan la ministra austríaca Claudia Plakolm va definir el hijab infantil com un «símbol d’opressió» i va defensar que no havia de tenir lloc a les escoles. L’IGGÖ va respondre que vincular el mocador amb l’extremisme estigmatitzava les famílies musulmanes i vulnerava la llibertat religiosa. L’entitat sosté que restringir aquesta pràctica en nom del benestar infantil pot acabar limitant drets fonamentals.

També ha advertit que fer servir el benestar infantil com a argument per restringir pràctiques religioses pot vulnerar drets fonamentals. “Qui nega l’autodeterminació religiosa d’una nena no la protegeix, la limita”, ha declarat el líder de l’organització.

L’esquerra denuncia racisme i crida al boicot

Entre els grups més bel·ligerants contra la nova llei hi ha LINKS, una formació d’esquerra radical que es defineix com a queerfeminista, antiracista i anticapitalista. El partit qualifica la prohibició de «racista» perquè considera que afecta específicament les nenes musulmanes i converteix la seva religió en un problema dins de l’escola. LINKS ha fet una crida explícita a boicotejar la norma i participar tant en les protestes davant del Ministeri d’Educació com en la vaga escolar convocada per al 9 d’octubre.

La protesta té una altra particularitat: també hi participen les joventuts del partit que ha aprovat la prohibició. La Sozialistische Jugend (SJ) està vinculada a l’SPÖ, el Partit Socialdemòcrata d’Àustria, que forma part del govern de coalició amb l’ÖVP i NEOS i que va donar suport a la nova llei. Tot i això, les seves joventuts s’han posicionat en contra de la mesura i participen en la vaga escolar del 9 d’octubre, al costat dels Rote Falken, organitzacions comunistes i altres col·lectius estudiantils.
