Feminists in France wear the Muslim headscarf against the possible ban

Left-wing women (and men) make videos wearing the veil against the RN's proposal to ban it in public spaces.

Diverses dones d’esquerres no musulmanes de França han començat a publicar vídeos a les xarxes socials en què es posen el vel islàmic com a gest de protesta contra la proposta del Rassemblement National (RN) de prohibir-lo a l’espai públic. La polèmica arrenca el 30 d’agost, quan Jean-Philippe Tanguy, diputat del Rassemblement National i proper a Marine Le Pen, va anunciar a BFMTV que el partit vol sancionar amb multes les dones que portin el vel islàmic a l’espai públic si arriba al poder. “Si hi ha dones que porten el vel quan estigui prohibit, tindran una multa”, va afirmar. Tanguy va justificar la mesura com una forma de combatre la ideologia islamista i també, segons va dir, de mostrar solidaritat amb les dones que són obligades a portar-lo en altres països.

La reacció contra la proposta s’ha estès durant els darrers dies a Instagram, TikTok i X. Le Parisien ho explica i recull missatges de solidaritat amb les musulmanes que porten vel. El diari assenyala també que alguns homes s’han sumat als vídeos.

Posar-se el vel per «defensar la llibertat»

El missatge que transmeten els vídeos és, sobretot, que prohibir el vel significaria limitar la llibertat de les dones musulmanes per decidir com vesteixen. Les participants, que ni són musulmanes, es graven recollint-se els cabells i cobrint-se el cap amb un mocador com a demostració de solidaritat. “Si aquesta llei s’aprova, em posaré el vel immediatament”, afirma una de les usuàries recollides per Le Dauphiné. Una altra resumeix el gest amb les paraules “solidaritat, llibertat femenina”.

Altres van encara més enllà i plantegen portar-lo deliberadament com una forma de desobediència davant d’una eventual prohibició: “Volen prohibir-nos-el? Serem encara més a portar-lo”, assegura una de les participants. La idea que es repeteix és que, encara que elles mateixes no siguin musulmanes ni duguin habitualment hijab, començarien a fer-ho si una futura llei impedís a les musulmanes portar-lo.

Le Parisien descriu el fenomen com una onada de contestació que està guanyant força i assenyala que són dones de perfils diversos les que apareixen a les xarxes amb el cap cobert. El denominador comú és presentar el gest com una defensa de la llibertat individual: davant la voluntat del RN d’eliminar el vel de l’espai públic, la resposta d’aquestes dones consisteix precisament a posar-se’l.

El vel al centre de la batalla política francesa

La proposta del RN arriba en un moment en què el vel islàmic torna a ocupar un lloc central en el debat polític francès. Marine Le Pen ha recuperat una mesura que el seu espai polític defensa des de fa anys. Però ara la discussió ha donat un nou gir: no només es debat si el vel s’ha de permetre o prohibir, sinó fins i tot si és legal defensar-ne públicament la prohibició.

Aquesta mateixa setmana, l’advocat Arié Alimi, membre de la Lliga dels Drets Humans, va sostenir a BFMTV que proposar la prohibició del vel podria constituir una incitació a la discriminació religiosa i va anunciar denúncies. El debat sobre el vel, per tant, s’ha convertit alhora en una disputa sobre islam, laïcitat, llibertat religiosa i llibertat d’expressió.
