L’independentisme escocès treu banderes d’Escòcia per no incomodar els immigrants

Ajuntaments de l’SNP retiren la bandera d’Escòcia dels carrers per evitar tensions amb la immigració amb l’excusa de la seguretat.

Una investigació de 1919 Magazine basada en peticions de llibertat d’informació ha revelat que els ajuntaments van retirar almenys 774 banderes d’Escòcia dels carrers durant el 2025, davant de només 13 l’any anterior. El municipi que més en va retirar va ser Falkirk, amb 217. La paradoxa és que Falkirk està governat pel Scottish National Party (SNP), el gran partit independentista escocès.

No és l’únic cas. Dumfries and Galloway va retirar 165 banderes i el seu govern municipal és actualment una administració de l’SNP, tal com consta en els mateixos documents oficials del consistori. És a dir, el mateix partit que durant dècades ha convertit les banderes nacionals en un dels seus principals símbols polítics ara les retira dels carrers.

Retiren banderes per «evitar accidents»

Els ajuntaments defensen que la retirada no respon al missatge polític de les banderes, sinó a qüestions de seguretat i autorització. Per exemple, el Consell de Falkirk assegura que les banderes penjades sense permís en fanals i mobiliari urbà poden distreure els conductors, danyar les instal·lacions o caure a la calçada i posar en risc vianants i vehicles. El consistori afirma que aplica el mateix criteri sigui quina sigui la bandera.

Les banderes no van començar a aparèixer massivament als fanals per casualitat: formaven part de Raise the Colours, una campanya que es va estendre pel Regne Unit i que a Escòcia va coincidir amb mobilitzacions contra els hotels destinats a allotjar sol·licitants d’asil. A Falkirk, el grup Save Our Futures and Our Kids’ Futures, organitzador de protestes contra l’allotjament d’immigrants, va animar explícitament a penjar banderes i, després que l’ajuntament les retirés, va iniciar una recaptació de diners per comprar-ne més.

Que la qüestió va molt més enllà dels possibles “accidents” ho demostra també la mateixa reacció política de l’independentisme. John Swinney, primer ministre escocès i líder de l’SNP, va intervenir públicament per disputar als manifestants el significat de la bandera nacional. Davant l’ús de la bandera en les protestes contra la immigració, va declarar que “la nostra bandera és una bandera de benvinguda” i que “els refugiats són benvinguts aquí”.

L’embolic per la bandera dels independentistes es complica quan es compara amb el que fan altres ajuntaments en mans de l’SNP: Glasgow, per exemple, no va considerar necessari retirar les banderes penjades als fanals. La líder municipal, Susan Aitken, de l’SNP, va afirmar que el consistori les retiraria quan estiguessin deteriorades o representessin un problema real, no pas de manera automàtica només perquè haguessin estat col·locades sense permís.

És a dir, la política de retirada no és uniforme a Escòcia: alguns ajuntaments les eliminen de manera sistemàtica, d’altres només quan es deterioren i d’altres han arribat a aturar les operacions. En aquest context, presentar les 774 retirades com una simple mesura per “evitar accidents” resulta, com a mínim, insuficient per explicar el que està passant. Per contra, els crítics acusen l’independentisme de retirar la bandera per no ofendre els immigrants.
