Prop de 150 treballadors del sistema educatiu de Montreal han deixat la feina en els últims mesos després de negar-se a complir la normativa del Quebec sobre símbols religiosos a l’escola. El gruix dels afectats són perfils no docents com monitores de menjador o extraescolars, assistents educatius, conserges o personal administratiu. La llei que els afecta inclou que ni les mares poden entrar a les escoles a fer voluntariat si porten el hijab posat. El resultat dels esforços del Quebec per lluitar contra els símbols religiosos és que el 73% de les dones musulmanes han sol·licitat o estan considerant sol·licitar feina fora del Quebec, segons una investigació publicada el 2025 pel Consell Nacional de Musulmans Canadencs.

El model actual no és nou, sinó el resultat d’una aplicació progressiva de la laïcitat a l’escola pública. El 2019 la prohibició va començar per les professores tot i que es va permetre que les velades mantinguessin el lloc però sense opció a millorar. Amb el pas dels anys, aquesta política s’ha anat endurint i des de l’octubre s’ha eliminat qualsevol excepció per a personal no docent. A partir d’aquest moment, qualsevol treballador dins l’escola ha de complir la norma sense marge.

Unes 150 dones prefereixen perdre la feina a complir la llei

Expliquen mitjans com CBC, que les conseqüències ja son visibles. Treballadores escolars han optat per dimitir abans que retirar el hijab, mentre que en altres casos han estat apartades o no renovades per negar-se a complir la llei. La situació ha provocat una pèrdua de personal en un sistema educatiu que ja arrossegava dificultats per cobrir determinats llocs.

El govern del Quebec manté una línia clara i sense concessions. Defensa que l’escola pública ha de ser un espai completament neutral, on qualsevol expressió religiosa visible queda fora de l’àmbit educatiu. El ministre d’Educació, Bernard Drainville, ho resumeix així: “Van decidir no respectar la llei i, per tant, és la seva decisió. Han d’assumir les conseqüències de la seva pròpia elecció personal”.
