A monument dedicated to the British soldiers who died during the two World Wars has been desecrated in Warrington, England. The perpetrators have beheaded the figure of the crucified Jesus Christ that presides over the memorial and left graffiti in Arabic on the plaques bearing the names of the fallen. The attack took place in the grounds of St Alban’s Catholic Church, according to ITV News. The rector has denounced religious persecution and the police are investigating the incident as a hate crime. A suspect has been admitted to a mental health facility under British mental health legislation.

The attack took place on Friday 30 October, presumably between six in the evening and ten at night, but it was not discovered until Sunday 1 November. A member of the parish found the monument destroyed and alerted the police at 9.23 am. The damage affects both the figure of Jesus Christ and the commemorative plaques, which bear the names of the soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

The attack took place a few days before Remembrance Sunday, the day on which the United Kingdom honours soldiers killed in action. The parish of St Alban, the oldest Catholic community in Warrington, founded in 1772, has had to clean the graffiti from the monument before the commemoration on 8 November. It has not yet been announced when the decapitated figure of Jesus Christ can be restored.
