A 27-year-old Muslim trainee has been removed from the police training school in Graz, Austria for behaviour that the Ministry of the Interior describes as «Islamic fundamentalist». According to the Austrian public radio and television, she refused to work with men for religious reasons and encouraged colleagues to convert to Islam and join the Islamic State. The woman is the daughter of Afghan parents, has lived in Austria for 25 years and holds two university degrees.
Islamic State recruitment within the police
The young woman's behaviour went far beyond announcing that she would refuse to work with men. According to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, During conversations with fellow cadets at the police academy, she tried to win them over to Islamic State. She is reported to have told colleagues phrases such as «let's travel together and join the Islamic State» and «repeat after me and you will convert to Islam». These conversations led to the opening of an investigation and the Graz Prosecutor's Office ordered a search of his home.
Her conduct had already caused problems during training, where she refused to do exercises with men for her muslim faith. The Austrian police considered that this conduct was at odds with equality between men and women and with the separation of religion and policing, and expelled her from the training.
Refusal to enforce the law against the burqa
The future agent had also made it clear that she did not intend to enforce the Austrian ban on face coverings, a rule that affects garments such as the burqa or the niqab. According to Heute, had explained to his companions that, once he became a police officer, he would not enforce this law. She also wanted to wear hijab during the service.
The young woman was just a few months away from completing her training and was expected to join the Vienna police. The Ministry of the Interior considers that her conduct violated basic principles of the force, such as equality between men and women and the separation of religion and professional activity. The Federal Police Director, Michael Takács, was categorical: whoever does not accept these principles «cannot and will not be part of the federal police».
The devices seized during the search, however, have so far yielded no evidence to support any link to the Islamic State.
