A 23-year-old man attacked a police officer on Capel Street in Dublin on Tuesday evening while shouting “Allah Akbar”. The assailant used a tactical knife to stab a trainee officer, who was on uniform patrol, several times. The attack was quickly brought under control by his colleagues, who subdued the man with pepper spray.

The suspect, identified as Abdullah Khan, a resident of Ireland of Pakistani origin, has been charged with assault with a weapon and remanded in custody without bail. The police are investigating whether it was an attack motivated by religious extremism.
