«If we were in Morocco, I'd have killed you by now.»
The violence was not limited to controlling her clothing, studies or friendships. According to the facts admitted by the accused himself, when she displeased him or refused to obey him, he would physically assault her. On at least two occasions he punched her in the face, chest and stomach, and he even grabbed her by the throat.
The victim endured this situation for months without going to the doctor or explaining what was happening. In November 2020, after another threat, she finally asked her father for help. The man had told her: «You're lucky to be in Spain; if we were in Morocco, he'd have already killed you.»Two months later, in January 2021, a court issued a protection order in favour of the woman.
The headscarf as part of the control
Among the channels that the judgment situates within this climate of domination there was an obligation to wear the headscarf. It does not appear as an isolated incident, but alongside a ban on studying, going out with friends, seeing a psychologist or freely deciding on basic aspects of her everyday life.
This control was accompanied by humiliations, threats and physical assaults whenever the woman contradicted him or did not obey. The situation continued for months, until in November 2020 the victim asked for help.
From 30 years requested to a two-year sentence
The prosecution had initially sought sentences totalling 30 years' imprisonment, as the man was also accused of two counts of sexual assault. These charges, however, were dropped during the trial and the parties reached a plea agreement. The defendant admitted the facts and accepted a conviction for three counts of assault and one of threats.
The final sentence was two years' imprisonment and 80 days' community service, as well as a €10,000 compensation payment and a ban on approaching or contacting the victim.
