On 19, 20 and 21 December, the fourth edition of the Congress of Young Muslims of Catalonia will be held in El Prat de Llobregat, organised by UCIDCAT (Union of Islamic Communities of Catalonia) and Entre Joves., in direct collaboration with the General Directorate for Religious Affairs of the Generalitat. The event, presented as a space for training, fellowship and spiritual growth, features a programme packed with talks on mental health, family budgeting, emotional education or The role of women in the family.
But behind this friendly appearance there is a worrying reality: among the speakers There are several preachers with a regressive, patriarchal and macho discourse.. And one of them stands out in particular: Yusuf Soldado.
Message to young Catalans: a woman must obey and satisfy the man.
The message that Yusuf Soldado conveys to young Catalans is clear: The woman has a religious obligation to obey her husband in everything, including sex.. In his talks, Soldado states that a woman must have sexual relations whenever her husband wants and that «The angels curse the woman who refuses.«. He also defends that Total obedience to the husband is a divine command that regulates family life., making any personal decision of the woman secondary. His notion of “female freedom” is limited to what fits within the traditional, patriarchal roles he presents as essential to Islam.
In his videos, Soldado goes so far as to claim that Even if the man is oppressive, unjust or abusive in his behaviour, the woman must continue to obey him. Presents this submission as a path of suffering and that “It will be Allah who will settle the man's account.”This places all the responsibility on the woman — who must endure, remain silent and comply. while exempting the man from any immediate limit. The result is a narrative that normalises inequality., It legitimises female suffering as a religious virtue and disables any resistance to abuse., placing the woman in a role of unconditional obedience even when that obedience harms her.
This approach is not only profoundly sexist, but also It also directly contradicts the values of equality, autonomy and sexual freedom that Catalan society upholds.. In practice, what Soldado offers young people is a model of femininity based on submission, where a woman cannot decide about her own body or question injustices within marriage. His vision transforms obedience into virtue and hierarchy into a moral norm, delegitimising all feminist struggle and reinforcing the idea that women's freedom is a threat to the order he seeks to preserve.
UCIDCAT promotes female submission as the norm
The message that Soldado conveys is not a marginal or improvised interpretation: It is part of a Salafist reading of Islam that he himself presents as “the authentic one”, “the one that cannot be negotiated” and “the one that must be accepted even if you don't like it.”. This extremely rigid vision is the one that UCIDCAT disseminates through its training apparatus, its talks and its doctrinal references.
By including Soldado as a speaker at the Congress of Young Muslims, UCIDCAT not only endorses him: confirms that this is his way of understanding and conveying Islam to young Catalans. An Islam based on rigid roles, on male hierarchy, on sexual submission as a religious duty and on the idea that questioning it is going against God. This proposal is in direct conflict with the democratic and feminist values of Catalonia., but it is presented to young people as if it were the only legitimate option, rendering all other ways of living Islam invisible. that they are indeed compatible with equality and freedom.
The Generalitat's reference point that conveys a model incompatible with equality.
UCIDCAT is no ordinary entity: He is the Generalitat's principal interlocutor on matters relating to Islam and receives institutional and financial support to represent the Muslim community.. From this privileged position, it transmits to young people a religious model based on female submission, blind obedience and patriarchal hierarchy. Although the president of UCIDCAT proclaimed in 2011 that he wanted to build a “Catalan Islam” that would harmonise faith and the country's values, the reality of what is being conveyed at today's youth congress is completely at odds with that commitment and reinforces a rigorist, patriarchal Islam.
On top of all this, there is also that The Directors of Religious Affairs of the Generalitat usually attend UCIDCAT congresses., a presence that, de facto, endorses and institutionally shields these messages from hundreds of young people. The result is a serious contradiction: The Government validates as an official reference an entity that promotes a model of society incompatible with the equality that Catalonia defends..
