On 11 July 2025, during the Friday sermon at the Islamic Association of Raleigh mosque in North Carolina (United States), Imam Muammar Dahnoun has denounced a global offensive against Islam. on the part of the world's superpowers. Before the faithful, he has assured that Gaza has become the face of Muslim resistance. and has defended that Islamic identity must be above personal existence..
Gaza as a centre of Islamic resistance
Dahnoun has positioned Gaza as a symbol of resistance for the international Islamic community. He has stated that the Gaza Strip has “assumed” the role of the visible face of the ummah. —the community of Muslim believers— and that the Palestinian people have prioritised the defence of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its Islamic identity, despite the risk this entails.
According to the imam, opposition to the international recognition of the Israeli occupation carries an extremely high cost, but he has praised the Palestinians for not having surrendered. He described them as “guerrillas” and as “Saviours of the Islamic nation”.
Islamic identity, above all else
One of the main messages of the sermon was that Islamic identity must take precedence over one's own physical life. Dahnoun has stated that living without Islam, dignity or resistance is a form of surrender. He has presented this sacrifice as the contemporary version of the hijra, the migration that the Prophet Muhammad made to establish a community founded on justice, truth and honour.
«To make your Islamic identity above your own existence: that is the true hijra.«(1)"
(1) Here, the Hijra means moving from fear, humiliation and resignation to responsibility, courage, action and dignity.
Ideological war against Islam
Dahnoun has denounced that the superpowers are carrying out a ideological and cultural war against Islam. He has literally cited the areas he considers to be under attack:
“It is a war against Islam in school textbooks, a war against the modesty of our daughters, a war against the manliness of our sons, and a war against the faith that should dwell within our hearts.”
The imam has insisted that the majority of Muslims live in a state of fear and passivity, operating, in his view, at “the lowest level of faith”: inner silence. In response, he has issued a direct call:
“Don't wait for a saviour. Be the saviour in your home, in your mosque, in your community.”
He has also emphasised that verbal action and public presence are religious obligations when one cannot act more forcefully. And he has criticised the fear of being singled out, of protesting or of losing personal comfort as causes of widespread inaction.
