According to reports Utrecht Regional Television, a man burst into the church of Church of the Holy Spirit in Utrecht and dislodged the image of Jesus. The sculpture fell onto a kneeling bench and partially broke an arm. Shortly afterwards, the same outlet published security camera footage showing the man entering, walking calmly and pushing the image. This audiovisual material is in circulation to assist the investigation.

It's not the first attack, but it's the open church.

The Majellakerk had previously suffered other minor incidents targeting religious objects, according to local parishioners. Despite this, the Majellakerk is the only church in Utrecht that remains standing. Constantly open, even outside Mass times, to allow the faithful moments of recollection and prayer throughout the day

This ’always-open church“ policy has been the subject of debate following the vandalism: some argue that this accessibility is essential to the community spirit, while others suggest that access should be restricted for safety reasons.

A gesture of community: a new Jesus as an offering

In response to the act, a parishioner decided to donate a new sculpture of Jesus to the Majellakerk as a gesture of solidarity. The original sculpture, despite the damage to its arm, is expected to be restored. The fact that the image had never been completely destroyed has made it repairable.

The act has left feelings of pain and vulnerability among the faithful, but the offering has been perceived as a seed of hope: “not only for the building, but for those who find in this image a symbol of faith.”.
