A Quran is burned in the Netherlands (with a court order) and within minutes violence erupts on the streets.
On Tuesday afternoon, Edwin Wagensveld (of Pegida) burned a Qur'an in front of the immigrant hostel in Hoofddorp. The disturbances lasted into the night.

On Wednesday, 24 September 2025, The leader of Pegida in the Netherlands, Edwin Wagensveld, carried out a burning of the Qur'an in front of an asylum seekers' reception centre in Hoofddorp. (Netherlands). The event had initially been banned by the city council, but hours earlier a court had ruled that it could be held under specific safety conditions.
The protest was a response to the town council's refusal to allow an action in the municipality months earlier. According to the court, one cannot prohibit the burning of the Qur'an unless it compromises security. According to the judge, It has not been sufficiently demonstrated that a fire can be caused.. However, he imposed some conditions on the burning of the Qur'an:«There must be a sand-filled container in which the book is burnt, there must be a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket nearby to extinguish it, and the burning must not last more than fifteen minutes.«.
Ten minutes of action and a whole day of riots
Wagensveld arrived at the scene by car, displayed a «Right to Resistance» banner and, in front of the media, burned a copy of the Qur'an. The action lasted less than ten minutes and immediately provoked violent reactions from both immigrants and left-wing groups who had also gathered in the area.
According to local media such as NOS i NH News, Opponents of the burning of the Qur'an threw stones, fireworks and metal objects. both against the Pegida participants and against the police.
Riot police on the street and 7 arrested
The police immediately deployed riot police units with dogs and several vehicles to contain the disturbances, which spread to the neighbouring streets.
According to NH News, The disturbances in the centre of Hoofddorp caused significant damage to commercial premises on the Marktplein: large shop windows were smashed at stores such as Rituals, Chickz & Chipz and a bag shop. Although the town council had initially spoken of a case of looting, the police have found no evidence that anything was stolen.
The final tally was seven arrests, most for breach of public order and disobedience to police orders, according to reports. NH News. The incidents caused material damage to street furniture and the surrounding area of the town centre, where fences and traffic signs were torn down and used as weapons. By around eleven o'clock at night the situation had partially calmed, but the police remained in the area until the early hours of the morning.
