A group of Dutch citizens has decided to take justice into their own hands in the face of what they consider to be uncontrolled immigration and an insufficient response from the authorities. On the weekend of 7 to 8 June 2025, A dozen people set up an unauthorised checkpoint on the N366 road, between Ter Apel (the Netherlands) and Rütenbrock (Germany), right on the border between the two countries..
Wearing high-visibility vests and carrying signalling torches, the activists stopped vehicles, asked drivers where they were heading and, in some cases, asked them to open their boot lids.“Nothing changes. Then we will.”, said one of the participants in statements collected by the media outlet. RMX News.
Police reaction and diplomatic tensions
German officers cleared the group from their territory, and they moved to the Dutch side of the border, where they continued to stop vehicles. Both the police and Westerwolde Town Council condemned the action for its dangerousness and illegality.“Citizens cannot carry out traffic checks. This leads to truly unacceptable situations.”, said the local mayor.
The Dutch Minister of Justice, David van Weel, acknowledged the growing unease over immigration, but called for calm: “We understand the frustration, but don't take the law into your own hands..Meanwhile, from Berlin, the German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, called for a firm response from the Dutch government to prevent such actions from being repeated.
Wilders: «I will take part»
The vigilantes' action comes at a time of great political tension in the Netherlands. The PVV party, led by Geert Wilders, has recently broken away from the coalition government due to disagreements over migration policy, and early elections have been called for 29 October 2025. Wilders has not hidden his support for border activists: “If Prime Minister Schoof does not send the army in force, we will. I will take part.”, stated via social media.
The immediate origin of the protest lies in Ter Apel, where the Netherlands' main refugee reception centre is located. It currently accommodates more than 2,000 people, which has prompted complaints from local residents and a rise in local tension. Participants in border control say that the State has failed and that urgent measures must be taken to cut off the entry of migrants coming from Germany.
