A public school in the London Borough has accused a pupil of racism after questioning a school activity linked to Ramadan, the holy month of Muslim fasting. According to the centre's letter, the minor repeatedly protested during the presentation of the religious acts and said: «Why do we have to do this? I won't do it. You can't force me. I won't change my mind.».
The document also warns that Any new “racist incident” will result in additional sanctions. In accordance with the centre's disciplinary regulations, the parents are urged to speak to the child so that he understands that this behaviour is unacceptable and reflects on it.
The facts are set out in a notification sent to the parents last year, in which Management describes the behaviour as ’racial harassment«.» and ensures that the incident will be recorded in the student's disciplinary file and in the centre's register of racist incidents.
Subject: Notification of a racist incident
We are writing to inform you of a racist incident that took place at the school today.
Our definition of racial harassment follows that of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE):
«Verbal or physical violence, including attacks on property or persons, suffered by individuals or groups because of their colour, race, nationality or ethnic or national origin, and when the victim perceives that the perpetrator has acted for racist motives or there is evidence of racism.»
During the faculty presentation on Ramadan, [name redacted] repeatedly stated:
«Why do we have to do this? I won't do it. You can't force me. I won't change my mind. Do I have to do it? If I don't, will you force me?»
When the other pupils began to take part in the activity, he pointed his finger at them and laughed at the other children who were singing, which made them feel uncomfortable.
This incident will be added to your child's conduct file and to the school's register of racist incidents.
If any new racist incidents occur, they will be handled in accordance with the centre's conduct and anti-harassment policies and may result in additional sanctions.
At Bedfont Primary School we maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of racism. Any racist behaviour is unacceptable and contrary to the school's culture and values.
Please speak to your child about this and help them understand why this behaviour is not acceptable.
If you wish to discuss the incident with a member of the management team, please contact the school office.
Yours faithfully,
Mr O'Connor
