Several left-wing non-Muslim women from France have begun posting videos on social media in which They wear the Islamic veil as a gesture of protest against the Rassemblement National's (RN) proposal to ban it in public spaces.. The controversy begins the 30th August, when Jean-Philippe Tanguy, a National Rally MP and close to Marine Le Pen, announced on BFMTV that the party wants To fine women who wear the Islamic veil in public spaces. if it comes to power. “If there are women wearing the veil when it is banned, they will be fined,” he said. Tanguy justified the measure as a way of combating Islamist ideology and also, he said, of showing solidarity with women who are forced to wear it in other countries.
The backlash against the proposal has spread over the past few days on Instagram, TikTok and X. The Parisian It explains this and compiles messages of solidarity with Muslim women who wear the veil. The newspaper also notes that some men have joined the videos.
To put on the veil for «to defend freedom»
The message conveyed by the videos is, above all, that Banning the veil would mean limiting the freedom of Muslim women to decide how they dress.. The participants, who are not even Muslim, film themselves gathering their hair and covering their heads with a headscarf as a demonstration of solidarity. “If this law is passed, I will put on the veil immediately.”, says one of the users interviewed by The Dauphiné. Another summarises the gesture with words “solidarity, female freedom”.
Others go even further and propose deliberately wearing it as a form of disobedience in the event of a potential ban: “Do they want to ban it for us? We'll just wear it even more.”, one of the participants insists. The recurring idea is that, even though they themselves are not Muslim nor do they usually wear a hijab, they would start doing so if a future law prevented Muslim women from wearing it.
The Parisian describes the phenomenon as a a wave of protest that is gaining strength and points out that it is women from diverse backgrounds who appear on social media with their heads covered. The common denominator is to present the gesture as a defence of individual freedom: in the face of the RN's intention to ban the veil from public spaces, these women's response is precisely to don it.
The veil at the centre of the French political battle
The RN's proposal comes at a time when The Islamic veil returns to centre stage in the French political debate. Marine Le Pen has revived a measure that her political camp has been advocating for years. But now the debate has taken a new turn: it is no longer just being debated. whether the veil should be allowed or banned, but even whether it is legal to publicly advocate its prohibition.
This very week, the lawyer Arié Alimi, member of the League of Human Rights, he maintained on BFMTV that Proposing a ban on the veil could constitute an incitement to discrimination.religious discrimination and announced complaints. The debate over the veil, therefore, has simultaneously become a dispute over Islam, secularism, religious freedom and freedom of expression.
