An investigation by 1919 Magazine Based on freedom of information requests, it has revealed that Local councils removed at least 774 Scottish flags from the streets during 2025., compared with just 13 the previous year. The council area that removed the most was Falkirk, with 217. The paradox is that Falkirk is governed by the Scottish National Party (SNP), the main Scottish nationalist party.
It is not the only case. Dumfries and Galloway removed 165 flags and its municipal government is currently an administration of the’single nucleotide polymorphism, as stated in the council's own official documents. That is to say, the very same party that for decades has made national flags one of its principal political symbols is now removing them from the streets.
Flags removed to «avoid accidents»
The councils maintain that the removal is not a response to the political message of the flags., but to matters of security and authorisation. For example, Falkirk Council ensures that flags hung without permission on lampposts and street furniture They can distract drivers, damage facilities or fall onto the road and endanger pedestrians and vehicles.. The council claims that it applies the same criteria regardless of the flag.
The flags didn't start appearing en masse on the lampposts by chance: they were part of Raise the Colours, a campaign that spread across the United Kingdom and which in Scotland coincided with mobilisations against hotels intended to house asylum seekers. In Falkirk, the group Save Our Futures and Our Kids’ Futures, organiser of protests against the accommodation of immigrants, explicitly encouraged people to hang flags and, after the council removed them, launched a fundraising campaign to buy more.
That the issue goes far beyond possible “accidents” is also demonstrated by the political reaction of the independence movement. John Swinney, Scottish First Minister and leader of the SNP, publicly intervened to dispute with the protesters the meaning of the national flag. Regarding the use of the flag in the protests against immigration, he stated that “lOur flag is a welcoming flag.”and that“Refugees are welcome here”.
The fuss over the independence supporters' flag becomes complicated when compared with what other councils under SNP control are doing: Glasgow, for example, did not consider it necessary to remove the flags hanging from the lampposts.. The city leader, Susan Aitken of the SNP, said that the council would remove them when they were dilapidated or posed a genuine problem, not automatically just because they had been installed without permission.
That is to say, The withdrawal policy is not uniform in Scotland. Some town councils remove them systematically, others only when they deteriorate, and still others have even halted operations. In this context, presenting the 774 removals as a mere measure to “avoid accidents” is, at the very least, insufficient to explain what is happening. By contrast, critics accuse the independence movement of removing the flag so as not to offend immigrants.
