As of 1 September, the United Kingdom is funding an Islamic school with public money. that imposes the headscarf to girls as young as seven and which gives priority of access to Muslim pupils according to their families' religious practice.. Barnet Hill Academy was until now a private Islamic school with fees but will become free of charge by decision of Barnet Council (north London). The decision was taken under Barnet's Labour administration, but without a full council vote. A senior children's services official administratively authorised the Islamic school's incorporation into the state system, and the decision was not even subject to the ordinary political review procedure.
The same Official documents of the Town Hall eThey stipulate that the school will give priority to Muslim children and that This religious priority can be substantiated by verifiable criteria such as attendance at the mosque and commitment to the pillars of Islam.. It's not a state school that just happens to have Muslim pupils: it's a faith school that retains its Islamic criteria but passes the bill on to the taxpayer.
The switch from a private school to a state school does not oblige the institution to abandon its Islamic rules. Barnet Hill Academy keep the headscarf as part of the compulsory uniform for Muslim female pupils from the age of seven., and will continue to provide religious education according to the principles of Islam. The only thing the change entails is the abolition of private fees, but neither religious selection, nor confessional control, nor the requirement for primary school girls to cover their hair is abolished.
Public money to save and expand the religious model
Barnet Hill Academy's move into the state sector comes after years of financial difficulties. The accounts showed deficits and a situation that had cast doubt on the sustainability of the private model. Barnet Council has demanded guarantees so that taxpayers do not assume the debts incurred before the transfer, but from now on the school's day-to-day running will be supported by public funding.
The disappearance of quotas can completely transform the centre's dimension: The school expects to increase from its current approximately 200 pupils to more than 400 over the next few years.. Public funds, therefore, not only ensure the continuity of the project but can also facilitate its considerable expansion.
And this expansion will be carried out without renouncing the centre's confessional character. Barnet Hill Academy will be able to continue prioritising Muslim pupils and use families' religious practice as an admissions criterion.. Thus, a taxpayer-funded school will be able to give priority access based on a family's degree of affiliation with Islam. The change in model removes the economic barrier of fees but leaves another barrier intact: the religious one.
