Seròs is a municipality located in the Segrià region, in the Lower Segre, in north-west Catalonia. It has around 1,800 inhabitants, of whom about 500 are foreigners, mainly from Morocco. According to Idescat, around 200 do not understand Catalan. As explained by the…’Islamic News Agency, This town has been the scene of an unprecedented event in Catalonia over the past five centuries: the construction of a mosque with a minaret, the first to be erected on Catalan territory since the Middle Ages.
The Muslim presence in this region is not new. Between the 8th and 15th centuries the area formed part of al-Andalus, the Muslim domain on the Iberian Peninsula. Many of these settlements had mosques, minarets and a social and urban structure shaped by Islamic culture. This coexistence was progressively broken by the Christian Reconquest and definitively by the expulsion of the Moriscos decreed by King Philip III in 1609.
Moroccan-style minaret in Segrià
For more than 500 years, minarets completely disappeared from Catalonia. Serós was left without Muslims at the beginning of the 16th century, and the Christians used the mosque for their worship until they built the church at the end of the 18th century. However, in recent decades, Seròs has seen how a new Muslim community—comprising mostly families from Morocco—has settled in the municipality..
The new mosque aims to serve a rapidly growing Muslim community. The building replaces the old mosque on Rosari Street, which no longer had sufficient capacity for all the worshippers. The same is happening in all the surrounding villages, but only Serós has incorporated an architectural element of great symbolic significance: a Moroccan-style minaret with a square base, topped by a red decorative sphere called a yamur, which, according to Islamic tradition, protects the sacred building.
Men's and women's area
The interior of the mosque is organised on two storeys: The ground floor, with a capacity for a hundred worshippers, is reserved for men, while the upper floor is intended for women.. The main entrances are on Costa Street and Castle Street, with an iron gate decorated with eight-pointed Mudéjar stars.
Although the minaret is the most visible and distinctive element of the mosque, It cannot be used to call the prayer (adhan). According to the mayor of Seròs, Josep Antoni Romia (of Junts), The municipal regulations on civility and noise emissions prohibit the use of public address systems or religious singing in outdoor spaces.s.
