In mid-February, the National Police arrested the 53-year-old individual and deported him to Casablanca (Morocco). He has been banned from entering the Schengen Area for ten years. The National Court approved the expulsion after deeming him a threat to national security.
He worked as a hairdresser in Mataró, where he used his business to indoctrinate and recruit fighters for the Islamic State. The recruitment sessions were held both at the hairdressing salon and in private homes in Mataró, Barcelona and Tarragona.
Prior detention
In 2018, the Guardia Civil arrested this man and another for being part of a Salafist jihadist cell in Catalonia.
The investigation began in 2015 following a rogatory commission from Morocco. It was revealed that he was recruiting fighters to send to Syria and was in contact with members of jihadist cells.
A family link to terrorism
After being released on bail in 2022, he was monitored by the Mataró Local Intelligence Brigade to prevent further radicalisation.
The intelligence services detected that the hairdresser was maintaining contacts with radical circles and was continuing to indoctrinate new fighters. Specifically, the hairdresser's brother-in-law from Mataró travelled to Syria to join Daesh and was killed in combat. For this reason, the Mataró police station revoked his residence permit.
This family connection to jihadism was key to the investigation and reinforced the decision to expel him as a preventive measure. Finally, the National Police carried out his expulsion to Casablanca for being a security risk.
