Mohmed and Majed arrested on charges of trying to kill LGBTI locals in Detroit
The 20-year-olds had guns and wanted to attack on Halloween night. According to the spiritual advisor of one of them, it was an "opportune moment" to do "a good deed.".
An information from Associated Press explains that the FBI arrested two young men from Dearborn (Michigan) for planning a terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State against LGBTI bars. According to the 72-page federal investigation, they wanted to attack venues frequented by LGBTI people in Ferndale on Halloween night, a suburb of Detroit known for its open atmosphere and for hosting one of the largest Pride celebrations in Michigan.
They had purchased AR-15 rifles, pistols, more than 1,600 bullets, tactical vests, backpacks and GoPro cameras. There is a third person involved who was a minor who had participated in the conversations. According to the court summary, this minor regularly consulted a local Islamist ideologue who gave him spiritual instructions on when to perform what they called “a good deed.” The FBI intercepted encrypted conversations and followed the suspects with electronic surveillance and cameras installed outside the home of one of them in Dearborn.
Dearbron is a Muslim city
Dearborn is a city with a Muslim population of over 551% and a strong religious presence in public life. Since 2023, the mayor has been Muslim Abdullah Hammoud, and four of the seven council members are Muslim. They proposed banning the LGBTI flag because it does not fit with Muslim values, as neighbor Hamtrack did, but in the end they didn't approve it. What did succeed was naming a street after a Hamas and Hezbollah supporter.
The city was also the first in the country where the call to’Islamic prayer could be broadcast over loudspeakers five times a day. In this sociopolitical environment, the boys who wanted to attack the homosexual community, inspired by the Islamic State, grew up. They were educated in a city where banning LGBTI symbols is debated, where religion has a clear institutional presence and where ultra-conservative discourses find space in the public sphere.
