Una investigació periodística del mitjà Alpha News explica amb documents que unes reformes a dos instituts públics de Minneapolis inclouen instal·lacions pensades específicament per a la pràctica religiosa islàmica. La informació inclou els plànols i revela que els projectes contemplen la creació de sales d’oració i espais per rentar-se els peus, un ritual previ a les pregàries musulmanes.

Segons la documentació publicada, els centres afectats són el Park Center Senior High i l’Osseo Senior High School. La resposta del districte escolar ha sigut que la inclusió d’espais religiosos respon a les “necessitats dels estudiants” després de consultar diversos grups d’usuaris. Els gestors escolars argumenten que l’únic que fan és «atendre la diversitat».

Reformes sense publicitat i amb finançament opac

La investigació d’Alpha News es basa en documents interns i testimonis que prefereixen mantenir l’anonimat. Les autoritats no han fet públic que els plans de reforma inclouen zones religioses dins els instituts ni volen explicar el cost d’incloure aquests espais. Ni tan sols han volgut desvelar quina religió necessita una sala d’oració tot i que a ningú se li escapa que si els plànols inclouen rentadors de peus la religió és l’islam.

El més curiós del cas és que fonts consultades per la periodista qüestionen obertament que aquest tipus de decisions s’estiguin prenent amb finançament públic, tot i ser centres públics. La sospita ara recau també en qui finança aquestes reformes en espais que haurien de mantenir una posició de neutralitat religiosa.

El cas no és aïllat. Altres escoles de l’àrea de Minneapolis ja havien incorporat sales d’oració en els darrers anys. La novetat, però, és que ara han integrat espais de culte dins dels projectes arquitectònics i és l’inici de la consolidació com a part estructural dels centres educatius.
