Culture clash on First Dates: «If you're with me, you don't eat ham.»

A Moroccan on First Dates warns the candidate that to be with him she must give up eating ham. She gives him a lesson with her reply: «Why do you have to eat the same thing as me?»

The Moroccan Muslim Hamza and the Spaniard Gisela are getting to know each other on First Dates. He questions her about her tastes to find out if she's suitable for marriage to a Muslim. At first he discovers she doesn't drink alcohol and is pleased. But then the problem arises…

Do you eat ham?

After the alcohol he asks her if she eats ham and the world comes crashing down on him. She, oblivious to everything, tells him to calm down, that she'll eat his share of the ham. Off-camera he confesses: «He won't eat ham, otherwise we're not together.«.

The scene between the two continues with a «We have a problem, because I don't like ham at all.«And she, with Western courtesy, asks why they have to eat the same food. She uses the example of being a vegetarian to show him that individual freedom exists and that everyone does as they please. But he is Muslim and cannot understand it.

The «problem» is getting bigger and bigger because there's always been ham at the girl's house and she doesn't understand the problem.

And you wouldn't change your religion for me?

The boy, completely bewildered, doesn't understand a thing and asks her directly if she wouldn't change her religion. His hope, so as not to be near a ham, is that she will become a Muslim. But even so, she refuses both to convert and to give up ham.

Despite the cultural clash between someone who is respectful and someone who isn't, she decided to go on another date.
