The Department of Education has imposed a new measure that will require public schools to reserve places for pupils who join mid-year, thereby restricting access for Catalan families who register their children within the established period.

This change is a new difficulty for Catalan families, who see how It is becoming increasingly difficult to access quality public education without uncertainties or political conditions..

Catalans will have fewer options for choosing a school.

The justification for the change is that it aims to prevent the concentration of newly arrived pupils in certain schools and to reduce segregation. However, the reality is that this decision will limit the options of families who plan ahead and could make it difficult for many children to gain admission to the school they want.

The problem is exacerbated because, instead of allocating these reserved places to families who complete the pre-registration process at the designated time, they will be held back for pupils who arrive later. This means that many schools will have fewer places available from day one.

Every year, more students arrive once the course has started.

Every year, thousands of students join the Catalan education system out of term – in just the first five months of the current academic year, there have already been 12,000. This sustained increase in students arriving mid-year is changing the allocation of school places, causing the Department of Education to prioritise securing spaces for these students rather than allowing Catalan families to choose a school as normal.

The pre-registration period will open on 12 March for nursery and primary school and on 14 March for secondary school, but many families may find that, even if they complete the formalities within the deadline, the school they want no longer has a place because of these blocked places.
