La nit del dissabte 26 d’abril de 2025, un vehicle va atropellar una multitud durant el festival del Dia de Lapu Lapu, una celebració de la comunitat filipina a Vancouver, Canadà, de majoria catòlica. L’incident va tenir lloc al voltant de les 20:14 hores locals a la intersecció de l’avinguda 41 Est i Fraser Street. Segons les autoritats, almenys vuit persones van morir, inclòs un menor, i sis més van resultar ferides.

El conductor, un home de 30 anys conegut per la policia «en determinades circumstàncies». Va ser detingut al lloc dels fets després de ser retingut per testimonis. Les autoritats han descartat, de moment, que es tracti d’un acte terrorista, segons informa CBC News.

Una comunitat catòlica profundament afectada

La comunitat filipina de Vancouver, majoritàriament catòlica, es troba profundament commocionada per aquest atac. L’atac va succeir durant el festival Lapu-Lapu. Aquesta festa commemora el líder filipí que va resistir la colonització espanyola al segle XVI. Durant l’esdeveniment, milers de persones es van reunir per gaudir de música i gastronomia filipina.

Testimonis van descriure escenes de pànic quan un SUV negre va irrompre en la zona de vianants, atropellant diverses persones. El conductor va intentar fugir a peu, però els assistents el van retenir.
