According to the police, the suspects were handing over their documentation (NIE) and banking details to another foreign national in an irregular situation. This individual, lHe used to work in construction, pretending to be one of them.. In return, the owner of the NIE collected the entire salary and kept 20% as a commission for lending out the identity. Moreover, this arrangement allowed him to make contributions towards unemployment benefits.
The detainees are workers on a building site in Sant Antoni de Calonge (Baix Empordà) and They are accused of identity theft and of being in an irregular situation..
Denounced by an anonymous call
The National Police and the Labour Inspectorate inspected the building site. because they received the warning in an anonymous call. The police opened sanction proceedings against the company responsible for the construction work for breaches of labour and social security regulations. The investigation remains open to identify further responsibilities.
