A group of 20 Members of the UK Parliament are campaigning to build an airport in Mirpur, Pakistan. The initiative was published on News Hub Group It aims to facilitate travel for the large British-Pakistani community with ties to Mirpur. Currently, travellers have to travel by road for more than three hours to reach the nearest airports.

The MPs gave a public presentation of the project and released a joint letter they have sent to the President of Pakistan. In this letter, they express their support for the construction of an airport in Mirpur and formally ask the Pakistani government to advance the project.

Debate on the use of public money

The move has sparked controversy inside and outside Parliament over the intended use of British taxpayers' money. Critics see no logic in communities with international ties promoting the construction of infrastructure abroad.

Opposition to expanding Heathrow

The proposal has generated debate, since Some of the MPs who support the construction of the airport in Mirpur have previously opposed the expansion of Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom on environmental grounds.. This apparent contradiction has been the subject of discussion on various online platforms.

The case of Mirpur Airport has brought to the fore a complex and necessary debate about the limits of parliamentary representation, the coherence of environmental policies, and the meaning of public responsibility when it comes to international influence.
