On 24 April 2025, The Franco-Tunisian imam Hassen Chalghoumi expressed his concern on the social network X about the reinstatement of public funding for the Lycée-Collège Averroes in Lille., a private Islamic school. According to Chalghoumi, atThis educational centre is linked to the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and represents a threat to French republican values.. He stated that «Averroes is just the tree that hides the forest», referring to the existence of dozens of similar schools in France that promote an Islamist ideology.
Public money at Averroes School
In December 2023, The prefecture of the Nord department decided to terminate the partnership agreement with the State., alleging incompatibilities between the centre's teaching of Muslim ethics and the secular values of the French Republic. This decision entailed the loss of public subsidies the school had been receiving since 2008.
However, on 23 April 2025, The Administrative Court of Lille annulled this decision, arguing that the prefecture had not provided sufficient evidence of serious breaches of republican values to justify the termination of the contract. The court considered that the irregularities detected, such as the refusal of a surprise inspection, were not sufficient grounds for such a severe measure.
The imam wonders how we can fight Islamism if we are funding it.
Chalghoumi warns that Tens of thousands of French children are exposed to an Islamist ideology in schools operating with state support.. He cites examples such as the European Institute of Human Sciences (IESH) in Saint-Denis and the Al-Kindi school group, which, according to him, are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. He also highlights cases such as that of a primary school teacher in Drancy, who was investigated for making six-year-olds sing praises to the Islamic State and who had studied at the IESH.
In the tweet on X, he warns of:
- The decision of the Lille administrative court to reinstate public funding for the Averroes school is very worrying.
- Each year, 800 students attend. According to the Qatar Papers (2019), this centre is funded by Qatar Charity and linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
- Political Islam begins in schools, infiltrates, imposes and radicalises.
- More than 300 victims of terrorism, thousands of radicalised young people, yet we still haven't cut off their ideological root.
- My cry is not political. It is moral, civic and vital. Let us open our eyes!

Chalghoumi's denunciation tweet
The case of the Lycée-Collège Averroès and the allegations by figures such as Hassen Chalghoumi highlight the need for vigilance and transparency in the funding and oversight of religious schools, to ensure they do not become platforms for the dissemination of ideologies contrary to democratic principles.
