The 2025 Vienna municipal elections have left a nuanced electoral landscape. According to a survey by Foresight/Institute for Strategy Analyses (Individual Savings Account) commissioned by Austrian public television ORF, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) —a party known for its hard-line rhetoric against immigration— has secured notable support among immigrant voters.
The study reveals that the FPÖ It receives 181 TP 3 T of votes from people born outside Austria who have acquired citizenship (first-generation immigrants).. Among second-generation voters — those born in Austria to immigrant parents — support for the FPÖ falls to 14 per cent, while the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) secures an absolute majority with 52 per cent. Among first-generation immigrants (born abroad and naturalised), the SPÖ obtains 48 per cent, almost tripling the FPÖ's support.
This phenomenon breaks traditional moulds. It is often taken for granted that immigrants or the descendants of immigrants vote predominantly for left-wing or more progressive parties. But the Viennese case shows that a part of the immigrant vote is also sensitive to tough-on-crime rhetorict, order and immigration, which are the main programmatic pillars of the FPÖ.
The result of the elections in Vienna
In the 2025 Vienna municipal elections, the SPÖ remained the main force with 39.38 per cent of the vote, despite losing support compared to 2020. The big change, however, was driven by the FPÖ, which saw spectacular growth to 20.35 per cent, more than doubling its previous result.. The Greens have secured 14.52 per cent, with a slight decline, while NEOS have risen to 10 per cent and consolidated their presence. By contrast, the biggest defeat was suffered by the traditional right of the ÖVP, which fell to 9.65 per cent, losing much of its electorate.
The match Words (Soziales Österreich der Zukunft, «Social Austria of the Future»), which represents immigrants and promotes Islam, He obtained 0.84 per cent of the vote, remaining below the minimum 5 per cent threshold required to enter the Vienna city council.. This represents a slight decline compared to 2020, when they achieved 1.19 %. Despite having some presence in culturally diverse neighbourhoods, their widespread support remains limited.
