Getafe, a town in the southern Community of Madrid, has woken up to a feminist mural provocatively altered. According to reports I'm from Madrid, images of iconic figures of feminism like Frida Kahlo, Clara Campoamor and Rigoberta Menchú have appeared with niqabs painted on their faces and a blunt message alongside: “This is the true patriarchy, the Islamic one.”.
The mural, painted in 2021 by the Unlogic Crew collective near Getafe Central station, had already suffered other acts of vandalism. This time, however, The message has been clear: a critique of feminism that avoids questioning certain religious practices..
Immediate clean-up
The mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández (PSOE), has swiftly condemned the attack on social media with a forceful message: “In the face of hatred, extremism and racism, Getafe will always stand its ground.”, and adds that “Nor will they silence us in the defence of equality, the daily struggle of feminism and progress.”Municipal services have quickly cleaned up the graffiti and the police are investigating the incident. The mayor of the neighbouring town of Parla (from the PSOE) has also condemned the claim. According to him, «The intolerant act at night, in hiding. We, in broad daylight and with our faces uncovered.”.
It is not yet known who painted the niqabs at the feminist mural, but the action recalls the recent protest by Frente Obrero during the San Isidro festivities, where they were also used niqabs to denounce the Islamisation of Madrid.
For some, this action is Islamophobic and fosters hatred towards a religious minority. For others, It is a legitimate and courageous denunciation of the subjugation of women under cultural or religious pretexts.. While society debates, the institutions have acted swiftly: immediate condemnation by politicians, an express cleaning of the mural and a police investigation under way. The symbolic order is swiftly restored, but the discomfort of the message remains latent.
