Residents of Bochum (Germany) have reported receiving anonymous pamphlets in their letterboxes containing threatening messages and quotations from the Qur'an. The media Focus.de It explains that the leaflets were distributed in both residential areas and the city centre. The police have opened an investigation to identify their origin.

The texts include phrases such as «We will take revenge on the sinners.» or «As for the unbelievers, their home will be the fire; whenever they wish to leave it, they will be returned to it.»According to police sources cited by local media, the fragments correspond to religious passages from the Qur'an. The pamphlets also feature graphic elements such as the silhouette of a mosque, human figures and flames.

It is neither religious freedom nor the subject of criminal persecution.

Detradicalisation specialists consulted by the German media consider that the case cannot be interpreted as a legitimate expression of religious freedom. Kaan Ohron, a member of an advisory body, has stated: «The anonymous nature, the threatening tone and the emphasis on negative consequences indicate that this is not a positive communication of beliefs, but intimidation.»According to the authorities, so far the leaflets have not been attributed to any known author and the investigation remains open.

The State Security Service is investigating who distributed the leaflets. According to Sat.1 NRW, Pamphlets are not currently subject to criminal prosecution., the fact that, according to neighbours' testimonies, it has left some residents feeling powerless and afraid.
