The imam Ahmad Abul Baraa He is a Salafist preacher of Palestinian origin based in Germany. He has been a controversial figure due to his rigorist religious positions and his sermons disseminated via YouTube and social media. His lectures typically revolve around issues of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and the daily lives of Muslims in Europe.
In one of his videos, Abul Baraa answers a listener's question asking whether it is permissible to work in a Supermarket in Germany, such as Rewe, Aldi or Kaufland. The video already has over 35,000 views on a channel (which is not theirs) with more than 17,000 followers.
According to Abul Baraa, the answer to the question is clear:
No. A person should not work in a supermarket where there are mainly two jobs. These jobs are almost always stocking shelves or working on the tills. There is one exception, which I will explain later.
When someone restocks the shelves… What do they put on them? Only halal items? No. They also put on forbidden products, such as alcohol, meat that isn't permitted, gambling (for example, lotteries you can buy at the till), cigarettes and so on. All of this is forbidden.
And it is not enough to say, “I don't drink,” “I don't smoke,” “I don't eat pork.” No. The Prophet Muhammad —peace be upon him— said: when Allah forbids something, He also forbids its price.
This means you cannot buy it, sell it or store it. And even less can you make it easier for someone else to buy it through you. Because if you do, you will share in the sin.
That is why, brothers, it is forbidden to work in a supermarket restocking shelves or working at the till. What does the cashier do? He charges for these products, and thus the person can take them away. This means that here too he has actively helped them to commit the sin.
The only exception is if, in a large supermarket, one person is solely responsible for the fruit and vegetable section and has nothing to do with the other sections. In that case it would be allowed. But this is very rare..
Who is Abul Baraa?
Ahmad Abul Baraa (born in 1973 as Ahmad Armih) is a Salafist preacher who primarily operates in Germany. Of Palestinian origin, he grew up in Lebanon before moving to Germany.
He was the chief imam of the mosque. The Companions in Berlin-Wedding from 2010 until its closure in 2020, a mosque with connections to political Salafist circles and, according to authorities, even to jihadist factions. After the mosque's closure, it moved its activities to the DMG Braunschweig and intensified its digital presence: since 2018 it has run a YouTube channel with over 2,000 videos and has acted as a guest preacher in various regions of Germany.
The authorities of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, both in Baden-Württemberg and in Lower Saxony, consider that Abul Baraa promotes a political Salafist ideology that contradicts the democratic order, uses conspiratorial rhetoric against the West and advocate for a Muslim «parallel society», with a clear distinction between believers and non-believers .
