The 6 September 2024, the Dr. Haifaa Younis He delivered a lecture at the Valley Ranch Islamic Centre, a mosque located in Coppell, in the Dallas metropolitan area (Texas). The event was part of a lecture series that this institution regularly hosts with international guests to reflect on faith, the role of women and the everyday lives of Muslims.

Is the hijab a choice for a woman?

During her intervention, Younis answered one of the questions that, according to her, she receives most often: if the headscarf It's a matter of personal choice. His words were: «Is the hijab a choice for a woman? Yes, it is her choice whether to obey Allah or not.«

Although Younis insisted that the hijab is a personal choice, the way he phrased it raises a debate. Presenting the use of the veil as a choice between “obeying God or not obeying Him.” It places women before an alternative laden with religious and moral weight.. In this context, the option of not wearing a hijab is not presented as full freedom., rather than as a lack of obedience. This generates the paradox that The ’choice“ may not be experienced as free, but rather as conditioned by the pressure to fulfil the divine mandate and the resulting social judgement..

Dr Haifaa Younis is Board-certified obstetrician and gynaecologist in the United States.
