In Bélâbre, a small village of 900 inhabitants located in the heart of Berry (central France), popular mobilisation has achieved a victory that many saw as impossible. According to the testimony published by lawyer Pierre Gentillet on X (formerly Twitter) and reported by A good right, after two years of constant struggle, The project to establish a centre for thirty-eight immigrants has been definitively cancelled.
Tenacious resistance in a forgotten village
The struggle began in the winter of 2023, when The installation of an immigrant centre was announced without prior consultation.. Despite the adverse weather conditions — intense cold, rain and wind — the villagers did not give in. More than ten demonstrations were organised, in which, even on the worst days, around sixty people kept the protest alive in the village square.
Pierre Gentillet highlights the collective spirit that emerged from this mobilisation: «Bélâbre, this seemingly forgotten village in the heart of France, has shown that you cannot trample on it without consequences..The strength of this resistance sprang from an initial alert issued by an elderly, brave and clear-headed neighbour, before the project was made public.
A victory with national resonance
The first act of rebellion was a demonstration in the depths of winter, where, Against all odds, nearly two hundred people attended.. Most had never been involved in politics, but when their peace was disturbed, they decided to stand up to it. This mobilisation, persistent and well organised—with key figures such as Ludivine Fassiaux—ultimately forced the authorities to abandon the project.
Although the Bélâbre case is small compared with the multitude of centres being planned across France, its significance is enormous:«This village has sent a clear message to the State: projects cannot be imposed without the consent of the local population.«, says Gentillet.
Despite the victory, the fight may not be over. It is rumoured that the immigrant centre project could be moved to Argenton-sur-Creuse., a nearby town and, curiously, the birthplace of Gentillet's family. If so, the mobilisation could resume with the same vigour.
