Xipre del Nord es manifesta en contra de permetre el vel a les escoles

El vel estava prohibit als instituts de Xipre del Nord fins que les autoritats, alineades amb Turquia, han aixecat la restricció.

Segons informa l’agència Associated Press, milers de persones es van manifestar divendres 2 de maig a Nicòsia Nord per protestar contra la decisió de les autoritats de permetre el vel islàmic als instituts. Fins ara, el sistema educatiu de la part turca de Xipre mantenia una norma clara: cap símbol religiós a les aules. Però la recent decisió de revocar aquesta norma ha estat interpretada com un intent de Turquia d’imposar l’islam polític a una societat que, des de fa dècades, defensa el laïcisme com a tret identitari.

Els manifestants, amb pancartes com «No passarà» i «Xipre continuarà sent secular», denuncien que darrere del canvi normatiu hi ha una estratègia de «social engineering». Elma Eylem, presidenta del sindicat de professors de secundària KTOEÖS. “Aquesta no és una qüestió de llibertat individual —va afirmar—, sinó un intent deliberat del partit islamista turc AKP de controlar la nostra societat a través del cos de les noies”.

Xipre del Nord és musulmana, però secular

Tot i que la majoria dels turcoxipriotes s’identifiquen culturalment com a musulmans, Xipre Nord ha estat històricament un dels territoris més seculars del món islàmic. Aquesta actitud es deu a diversos factors: l’herència laica de les reformes kemalistes de Turquia, la influència britànica durant el període colonial i una identitat pròpia que sovint es contraposa a l’autoritarisme d’Ankara.

La societat turcoxipriota ha mirat de mantenir una separació clara entre religió i institucions públiques, especialment l’escola. La introducció del vel a les aules trenca aquest equilibri i encén les alarmes de molts sectors que temen perdre la seva autonomia cultural i política davant la ingerència de Turquia.

Tensió creixent entre laïcitat i islam polític

La protesta del 2 de maig no és l’única expressió del malestar social que ha generat la introducció del vel a les escoles. Dies abans, el Departament d’Afers Religiosos de Xipre del Nord va suspendre un imam per dir que els qui s’oposen al vel són “infidels”. En la mateixa publicació a les xarxes socials va avisar que no faria serveis funeraris a qui no acceptés el vel.

Aquest atac anava dirigit contra el sindicat de professors KTOEÖS, el mateix que ha liderat les mobilitzacions en defensa de l’escola laica. Les declaracions de Damar van generar una allau de crítiques públiques, i les autoritats religioses de l’illa, sota forta pressió, van reaccionar obrint una investigació disciplinària i suspenent temporalment l’imam de les seves funcions.

Aquest episodi demostra fins a quin punt la imposició del vel no és percebuda com una simple mesura simbòlica, sinó com una ofensiva organitzada que utilitza la religió com a instrument de control polític i social. Els sectors seculars de Xipre Nord han deixat clar que no pensen cedir.
