The Melilla Muslim Community Association has expressed its rejection of the proposal presented by Vox Melilla to the city assembly to to urge the central Government to promote an organic law prohibiting the use of the burka and the niqab in public spaces throughout the national territory. The party's initiative states that these items affect women's freedom and public safety.

The PP rejects the proposal as unnecessary

The motion received the support of only the two Vox MPs, while the rest of the Melilla Assembly voted against it, including the PP government, which holds an absolute majority. The popular executive dismissed the proposal because he believes it does not address any real need of the city and could affect communal harmony.. In this vein, the First Vice-President of the local government, Miguel Marín, urged the promoters of these debates “to focus on the real problems of the citizens”.

Along these lines, the First Vice-President of the Melillan Government, Miguel Marín, insisted that Melilla is a city “dand freedom, tolerance and respect between cultures”, an example of Plural coexistence without the need for measures that restrict individual freedom.. Marín warned that proposals which introduce identity tensions only serve to divide the population and stressed that “We cannot allow artificial debates that have nothing to do with the real problems of the citizenry to be opened.”That is why he urged the promoters of these initiatives to “focus on the real problems of the people of Melilla.”.

The Muslim Community has celebrated that the Government of Melilla has rejected this motion and has described the decision as ’institutional success”and of’an exercise in political responsibility”.

“It does not respond to the real needs of the public.”

According to the organisation representing Muslims, there are no indicators showing that the full-face veil is a real problem in the city or that it requires urgent legislative intervention. The organisation reminds us that the debate on religious dress must always be handled “with prudence, proportionality and respect”, as these practices fThey are part of individual freedom and are protected by the Constitution.. According to the association, introducing a ban of this nature would not only violate fundamental rights but also reflect an approach completely detached from the reality of Melilla.

Furthermore, the community warns that introducing identity debates without any social basis or real need “It only contributes to generating tension, tension and division.”in a plural city characterised by the daily coexistence of neighbours from different cultures, religions and backgrounds. For this reason, they insist that Melilla faces far more urgent challenges, such as employment, housing, education, the quality of public services and social cohesion. In this regard, they believe that political efforts should be directed towards improving these issues and not a debate that «It does not respond to the real needs of the public.»and which can fracture coexistence.

The entity assures that it will continue collaborating with institutions, organisations and citizens “with serenity and respect” to preserve social cohesion and prevent artificial debates from diverting attention from the real problems affecting the daily lives of Melillans.
