According to the New York Post, New York's Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, He ordered that sixteen public buildings in the state be lit up green for Muslim Heritage Month.. Among these buildings is the One World Trade Center, located on the site where the Twin Towers stood before the 11 September 2001 attacks.

The One World Trade Center was inaugurated in 2014 as a symbol of national resilience and a permanent memorial to the victims. Its symbolic use has, until now, been particularly cautious. Special lighting of the skyscraper has traditionally been reserved for widely consensual commemorations or for events strictly linked to the memory of 9/11.

Muslim Heritage Month, officially in New York for the first time

The initiative is framed within the proclamation signed by the governor that Declares January as Muslim Heritage Month in the State of New York for the first time.. The state government presents the measure as an institutional recognition of the historical presence and the social, economic and cultural contributions of the Muslim community in the United States. The proclamation also states that The State wants to strengthen its commitment to combating discrimination, hatred and crimes motivated by religion..

The celebration includes the illumination of various public buildings and infrastructure in green during the month of January. The government maintains that it is a symbolic gesture of visibility and cultural recognition. In this regard, the city's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, publicly expressed his support for the governor's decision in a statement. According to Mamdani, «Muslims have been part of New York for centuries.. We have created small businesses, raised our families, practised all professions, enriched our culture and gastronomy, and have been part of what makes our city what it is today.

Other state Muslim leaders also welcomed the decision, such as Assemblyman Charles D. Fall, State Senator Robert Jackson and New York City Council member Shahana Hanif, among others. Hanif said, «This recognition is more than symbolic: He states that the history and future of New York cannot be explained without its Muslim communities., and I am proud to be a Muslim New Yorker.».

«The Twin Towers could not be lit up green tonight.»

The backlash was immediate. One of the most widespread criticisms came from Queens Republican councillor Vickie Paladino, who wrote on X: «LThe Twin Towers could not be lit up green tonight.»The message directly alludes to the fact that the original buildings, destroyed in 2001, cannot be the subject of any symbolic commemoration.

Angela Morabito, spokesperson for the Defense of Freedom Institute, also reacted forcefully.«It is repugnant that the Freedom Tower, which is located on the World Trade Center site, is lit up green to celebrate Islam.», he wrote in a post on X. Morabito questioned the government's official narrative and added: «Which “contributions of the Muslim communities” is the governor honouring here? The era when the worst among them killed thousands of innocent Americans?.

Among the other 15 sites that Hochul ordered to be lit up in green are the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Grand Central Terminal–Pershing Square viaduct, the entrance to Albany International Airport, the entrance to the MTA LIRR–East End at Penn Station, and the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse.
