According to the Austrian newspaper Express, On Thursday 17 July the conflict in Syria spilled onto the streets of Vienna: a group of Sunni Muslims interrupted a peaceful demonstration by Syrian Druze and Kurds. It took place in Christian-Broda Square, in front of Westbahnhof station.
About 30 people took part in the protest, carrying candles, placards and flags of Austria, Kurdistan and the Druze community. They denounced the killings of civilians in the Suwaida region, in southern Syria.. The gathering was organised as a vigil. No speeches. No shouting. Only candles, minutes of silence and placards such as “Stop the massacre of civilians in Suwaida”. It was also intended to honour relatives and friends killed in Syria.
Muslim attack on the Druze and Kurdish demonstration
The event was suddenly interrupted by a group of Sunni Syrian men, who appeared without prior notice and without legal permission to demonstrate. According to several witnesses, This group acted with a clearly hostile and intimidating attitude. They approached the protesters, They surrounded them and began hurling serious insults at them, such as “pigs”, “sons of bitches”, “down with the Zionist agent”, and expressions like “every Sunni who doesn't take part is a traitor.”, pronounced in a clearly threatening tone.
Some of the attendees, especially women and young people, felt harassed and intimidated. A young Druze woman interviewed by the newspaper explained that they felt as though they were being persecuted again in Syria, as they were surrounded, heckled and humiliated in public simply for being part of a minority.
The Syrian war on European soil
In Vienna, a city with a large population of Syrian origin, concern is growing over the radicalisation of certain sectors. Specifically, it has been detected. a section of Muslims who do not accept religious diversity, not even within their own diaspora. This rejection translates into acts of intimidation such as those experienced during this protest, where what was meant to be a discreet and silent tribute became a scene of tension and hatred that reproduces, within Austrian territory, the very persecutions that Druze, Kurds and other minorities still suffer today in Syria.
The Druze and Kurdish communities have publicly denounced the incidents and have called on the Austrian government for greater protection against these attacks, which they consider serious and indicative of a deeper problem: the spread of religious fanaticism and the impunity with which certain radical Islamist groups act in European public spaces.
At present, neither the federal government nor the Vienna City Council has made any official statements, but various civil society organisations and refugee associations have begun to press for answers. They are calling for the right to assembly to be guaranteed, for sectarian intimidation to be prosecuted, and for firm action to be taken against those who use public space to impose hatred and silence on voices denouncing violence and discrimination.
