A secondary school teacher in England faces disciplinary investigation after several Muslim parents lodged formal complaints because their children had learnt to play chess in the classroom. He posted the case on Reddit. which has gone viral on social media and has reopened a debate about the limits of religious accommodation in the British state school.

According to the teacher's account, He organised a series of sessions to teach people how to play chess. The period before Christmas was intended to be more relaxed. With the aim of keeping the students' attention, the teacher brought several chess boards and devoted three sessions to teaching the rules. The activity was very well received by the students and no one complained at the time.

Six parents asked the management for an explanation.

The conflict broke out when Six families reported that chess is forbidden by their interpretation of Islam., considering them a “haram” activity. The teacher says he was completely unaware of this prohibition and that the school is not denominational nor does it have specific protocols requiring it to be familiar with the religious restrictions of each community.

Despite this, the centre's management reacted harshly. According to the teacher, The director reprimanded him for having “created a problem” and a formal disciplinary meeting has already been convened.. The teacher, who has been working at the centre since mid-2023 and who had until now received excellent evaluations, fears he will be used as a scapegoat to appease pressure from parents.

Muslim parents defend the teacher

The case has not generated unanimity among the other teachers or among the pupils' parents. Muslim families not only did not complain, but a Malaysian woman publicly came to the professor's defence. On social media, numerous teachers and users have emphasised that chess is a recognised and legitimate educational subject in the United Kingdom, and that it is not the teacher's role to adapt the curriculum to particular religious interpretations.

Several voices have pointed out that, in a state school, pupils may choose not to take part in an activity if it conflicts with their beliefs, but that this does not imply banning it or punishing the teacher who proposes it. The headteacher's response has also been criticised, accused of failing to defend the teacher against complaints that many consider disproportionate.

Islam divided by chess

Within Islam there is no unified position on chess: some Muslims consider it a licit, legitimate and beneficial activity, while other currents have labelled it as forbidden alleging possible links to gambling or neglect of religious obligations. This disparity of interpretations is not anecdotal and reflects a persistent internal fracture over what is acceptable and what is not in everyday life.

To what extent does this confusion go that, recently, The religious leader of Dagestan was forced to intervene publicly to clarify that chess is not contrary to Islam., after controversies and informal bans emerged. These bans are attributed to modern Salafist currents opposed to any form of distraction in life.

Far from being a practice alien to Muslim tradition, Chess has been widely played, studied and disseminated for centuries throughout the Islamic world.. From the Abbasid courts to Al-Andalus, the game enjoyed intellectual and social prestige, with treatises written in Arabic, recognised masters and a regular presence among scholars, rulers and erudite figures, a fact that directly contradicts the notion that chess is inherently incompatible with Islam.
