Santa Coloma de Gramenet will host the SCG Human Rights series from 5 November to 15 December 2025. It is a project of 12 simultaneous photographic exhibitions in public spaces that denounce human rights violations around the world. The exhibitions are accompanied by workshops, guided tours and educational activities.

The twelve exhibitions cover very diverse realities: indigenous communities in Russia, Patagonia and the Andes; populations affected by the war in Ukraine; children and young people with difficulty accessing education in Lebanon, Kenya or Colombia; migrants in transit across European borders; stories of community resistance in Guatemala or Palestine, and, finally, the situation of women with the headscarf under the Islamic regime of Iran.

The denunciation of the Islamic veil

The exhibition installed on the fence of IES Puig Castellar is dedicated to the Islamic veil in Iran. In the presentation, it is explained that the 1979 Islamic Revolution imposed the hijab on women as part of the aesthetic canons of Islam. The series aims to highlight the struggle of women (and men) to claim freedom and profound change.

In the other photographs we see all kinds of scenes from the everyday lives of women in Iran: for example, schoolgirls in a covered school, couples hiding to have a space of intimacy (showing affection is illegal under Islam), or women risking their lives by taking photos showing their hair.

An exhibition by the Santa Coloma Town Council (PSOE) highlights the Islamic veil as an example of a violation of human rights.

Girls forced to wear the Islamic headscarf. SCG-Human Rights

The intention of the City Council with this installation is to provoke direct reflection in the very space where everyday life takes place. The exhibition has been placed on the railings of the Puig Castellar Institute, uA constant stream of pupils and families, and especially many girls who wear the hijab.. The aim is to challenge them on the meaning of the veil imposed in Iran, commonly associated with a context of control and repression, and to open a debate that often goes unnoticed amidst the normality of day-to-day life.

The denunciation of the hijab in the city that banned the burka and the niqab

Santa Coloma's feminist commitment received a decisive boost in 2010, when Núria Parlón took office as mayor and She made the defence of women's rights one of the pillars of her government.. One of the first measures that he promoted it was the ban on the burqa and the niqab in municipal buildings, a decision that was presented as a matter of rights, coexistence and equality. Throughout her terms in office, Parlón also promoted initiatives with a more structural scope. The most significant was La CIBA, a pioneering facility dedicated to resources for women.

Her successor, Mireia González, has taken up this legacy and maintained the feminist momentum as the central plank of the municipal government. In this continuity s’It inscribes the exhibition installed in the public space, displaying it explicitly and visibly to everyone., the denunciation of the imposition of the Islamic veil and the associated human rights violations.
