A group of teenagers aged about 14 or 15 interrupted a Catholic mass in Vienna, Austria, repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar”. The events took place on 6 October 2026 in a church in the west of the Austrian capital, according to the newspaper Die Presse. The youths began laughing and making noise at the church entrance before shouting the islamic proclamation during the religious service. The priest, who has been serving in the parish for 20 years, said he had never experienced anything like it and revealed that another priest in Vienna had told him that these interruptions occur regularly in his church.

The priest has asked that neither his name nor the parish's location be published to prevent it from becoming a target for Islamist extremists. It is a significant detail: after the interruption of the mass, the priest prefers to remain anonymous for security reasons. Despite the incident, he has decided not to file a complaint because, as he explained, “there was no danger, it was not a threatening situation”.

A parish that helps muslims

The priest expressed particular disappointment because his parish has been helping muslim refugees since 2015. For more than a decade, the Catholic community has offered support in finding housing, German courses and assistance with administrative procedures. The priest has also explained that he maintains good relations with the muslim families of Turkish origin in the neighbourhood. For this reason, he considers it particularly serious that a Christian religious celebration was subjected to a provocation involving islamic shouts.

The priest has also questioned the education that adolescents receive and has asked what would happen if some young Catholics entered a mosque to interrupt the prayers. The priest has raised the question of where the contempt for a Christian religious celebration comes from. According to what he has explained to Die Presse, the youths may have acquired these attitudes from their families, at school or through social media. The priest believes these practices deserve a deeper social debate and has asked whether anyone can imagine a group of young Catholics entering a mosque to interrupt prayers with shouts.

The only political reaction that has emerged is that of Gudrun Kugler, an MP from the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the party that leads the country's government. “Anyone living in our country must comply with our laws and respect our fundamental values and our religious traditions”, she said. Kugler also warned that “we will not tolerate deliberate provocations or attempts to intimidate believers”.
