The Porte des Alpes campus of Lumière University Lyon 2 was the scene of a protest this Friday morning, as reported. The Figaro. The reason: the decision by the centre's management to to ban a Ramadan breaking-of-fast evening, scheduled for last 25 March in a university hall. Students opposed to the ban blocked access to the campus for a few hours.

The’breaking of the fast It had been announced on social media and organised by a group of students who had occupied a university hall for several days. However, the proposal became controversial after being denounced by the conservative student movement UNI, which criticised the organisation of a religious event in a public university space.

For its part, the Solidaires union supports the proposal and describes the position of the university and the professors who recommended they write «a secular letter» as Islamophobia and racism.

The students are planning to do a General Assembly on Monday to decide the next steps.
