On Thursday 22 May 2025, the municipality of Piera (Anoia), about 50 kilometres from Barcelona, experienced a situation of extreme tension. According to the newspaper The Debate, A group of around twelve unaccompanied foreign minors (UFM) escaped from a local care centre. The minors turned themselves in. in the middle of the town armed with bats and knives with the intention of attacking local youths.
Piera is a town of nearly 16,000 inhabitants with a predominantly native population, but a growing presence of immigrant communities, especially those of Moroccan origin.
According to the police, they wanted to continue a previous fight.
The incident is said to have originated from a fight between minors from the centre and youths from the village the previous day. According to police sources, the immigrant minors escaped to resume the confrontation. Several residents alerted the Mossos d'Esquadra (the Catalan autonomous police) at around 6.45 pm., after seeing the group of armed youths in the centre of the village with an intimidating attitude.
The Catalan police activated Riot police patrols to contain the situation and prevent them from attacking the youths. The officers managed to locate the minors and escorted them back to the reception centre. In the end, there were no assaults.
Neighbours demand solutions: “We want a quiet village”
This episode has generated alarm and indignation among the inhabitants of Piera, who denounce that it is not the first time they have had problems coexisting with the youth centre. Several neighbours have called a demonstration of Protest on Saturday 24 May at 11 am in Gall Mullat Square., with the aim of demanding greater security and changes in the management of reception centres.
One of the most shared messages on social media by the organisers says: “We want a peaceful village for our children.”.
A latent problem throughout Catalonia
This incident in Piera is not an isolated case but forms part of a broader issue related to the management of unaccompanied minors in Catalonia.
A recent example is found in Dosrius, a town in the Maresme region with around 6,000 inhabitants. There, a few days ago Some Moroccan youths robbed 11-year-old children and groped a girl.. The consequences of the youth centres are causing concern among residents, while Catalan politics remains indifferent and insensitive to every new report.
