The unstoppable arrival of Menas

The situation of unaccompanied foreign minors (MENA) in Ibiza has become critical in recent years. The significant increase in arrivals of Algerians has strained the available reception and guardianship resources. Spain's poor relations with Algeria and the Spanish government's complete unwillingness to repatriate them have pushed the island's reception system to breaking point.

According to data from the Council of Ibiza, The number of minors has increased significantly: from 22 in 2021, to 29 in 2022, 39 in 2023 and 109 as of September 2024.. This increase has led to overcrowding at the Pare Morey youth centre, which, with a capacity of 44 places, has come to accommodate up to 48 minors under the age of 18 and another eight minors, exceeding 337% of its capacity.
