La direcció del centre és qui va prendre la decisió d’acceptar alumnes amb la cara tapada. La directora defensa la solució com a mesura per evitar l’abandonament escolar i fomentar un ambient de confiança amb les famílies de les alumnes. Va explicar als mitjans que davant la negativa de les noies originàries de Bangladesh a treure’s el vel va optar per una actitud d’acollida.

A Itàlia no hi ha una normativa específica sobre l’àmbit escolar i per això la directora de l’oficina escolar regional ha demanat indicacions clares al ministeri perquè preveu més casos. I no és només per la identificació diària a l’entrada sinó perquè han personalitzat l’educació física perquè no realitzin activitats que puguin mostrar el cos o córrer perquè amb la túnica no poden.

Reaccions polítiques

Quan el cas ha sortit a la llum, s’ha desfermat la polèmica i han aparegut tot tipus d’opinions. La Lega reclama una llei regional que prohibeixi el niqab en espais públics. El president del partit, Mateo Salvini, ha dit clarament que “és inacceptable que una escola hagi d’adaptar els seus reglaments per sotmetre’s a cultures incompatibles amb els nostres valors«. El Partit Demòcrata diu estar preocupat perquè el rostre cobert por dificultar la convivència a l’aula i l’Ucoi aplaudeix la iniciativa.

Qui ha sigut més contundent és la diputada Sara Kelany de Fratelli Italia (el partit de Giorgia Meloni). Ha carregat fort contra les feministes que «sempre estan disposades a alçar la veu contra el patriarcat segons la conveniència, però que en aquest cas callen per por de ser titllades d’»islamòfobes«. «El més greu d’aquest silenci eixordador és que no ajuda les joves que volen emancipar-se a entendre quins són els seus drets a Itàlia«, ha conclòs.

Suport de les comunitats islàmiques

Qui recolza sense problema la decisió de la direcció és la Unió de Comunitats Islàmiques d’Itàlia (UCOII). El seu president, Yassine Lafram, ha dit que les escoles poden ser espais inclusius capaços de garantir el dret a l’educació sense discriminacions.

Tot i que la UCOII no promou l’ús del niqab, Lafram defensa el dret de les dones a portar-lo per convicció personal, i critica que es presenti aquestes estudiants com un “cas problemàtic”. En les seves paraules, en una societat democràtica cap Estat hauria de dir com ha de vestir una dona.

Lafram considera, per tant, «inacceptable que a una noia se li negui el dret a participar en activitats o que senti por de no poder acabar els estudis a causa de les seves opcions religioses.»
