El conflicte va començar quan el professor va renyar diversos alumnes que es rentaven els peus als lavabos dels nois per preparar-se per resar, seguint el ritual d’ablució previ a la pregària islàmica. Aquesta pràctica s’estava fent en plena jornada escolar i dins d’un espai destinat exclusivament a l’higiene personal, cosa que contravenia les normes internes del centre. Segons la denúncia, el docent va recordar-los que l’escola “no era una institució religiosa” i fins i tot va suggerir que, si volien seguir rituals islàmics durant l’horari escolar, podien assistir a una escola musulmana propera.

L’escola, que no és un centre religiós, havia establert que qualsevol ritual de pregària o preparació només es podia dur a terme en una sala designada, precisament per evitar usos inadequats de les instal·lacions comunes. El professor va recordar als alumnes aquesta norma i els va demanar que respectessin l’espai, indicant-los que els lavabos no podien convertir-se en lloc de preparació religiosa.

Després d’aquest episodi, el professor va aprofitar l’hora de classe per explicar als alumnes el context de les normes del centre i com aquestes s’emmarcaven dins dels valors britànics de tolerància i convivència. També els va recordar que Gran Bretanya continua essent un estat cristià, amb el rei Carles com a cap de l’Església d’Anglaterra, i que l’islam és una minoria religiosa al Regne Unit. Segons el docent, aquesta explicació ajudava els alumnes a entendre per què les normes del centre existien i com s’aplicaven a tots per igual.

Els representants legals del docent van destacar que el centre era una escola no confessional, que havia prohibit informalment les oracions al pati i que el rentat de peus només es podia fer en una sala designada per a la pregària. Tot i això, la direcció va suspendre el professor el març del 2024 i el va acomiadar poc després.
