El grup de nacionalistes quebequès Québec FIER, amb més de 230.000 seguidors a Facebook, ha publicat durant les últimes setmanes diverses imatges de dones amb niqab en llocs públics de Montreal i altres localitats. Els administradors de la pàgina asseguren que volen “documentar la islamització del Quebec”, tot denunciant el que consideren una presència creixent de símbols religiosos islàmics als espais comuns.

Les publicacions van acompanyades de comentaris com “És una epidèmia, cada cop n’hi ha més” o “El Quebec no està a l’abric de l’islam radical”, que han provocat centenars de reaccions i missatges hostils. El grup es defineix com un “col·lectiu patriòtic” que defensa “els valors tradicionals i la identitat quebequesa”.

Líder musulmà: «No són islamistes radicals, són ciutadanes normals»

En resposta a aquesta campanya, el president del Conseil National des Musulmans Canadiens (CNMC), el convers Stephen Brown, ha declarat públicament que “una dona amb niqab no és una islamista radical; és una ciutadana que fa la compra, com qualsevol altra persona.” Aquesta afirmació ha estat recollida per mitjans com el Journal de Montreal i altres que se n’han fet ressò.

Brown ha demanat “deixar de confondre la fe personal amb l’extremisme religiós” i ha criticat la manca de condemna política per part del govern quebequès. “Entenem la preocupació per l’islamisme radical, però s’ha d’aprendre a diferenciar-lo d’una simple pràctica religiosa. Els discursos ambigus dels dirigents només alimenten la desconfiança”, ha dit.

Des del CNMC s’ha fet una crida al govern de François Legault i al partit Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) perquè condemnin públicament aquest tipus d’iniciatives. El president del CNMC ha recordat que, en el seu discurs inaugural a l’Assemblea Nacional, el primer ministre va advertir de l’arribada d’“islamistes radicals a l’assalt del Quebec” —una expressió que, segons Brown, ha contribuït a confondre la població entre extremisme i pràctica religiosa quotidiana. “No defensem els radicals —ha precisat—, defensem el dret de les persones a viure la seva fe amb dignitat i sense ser assenyalades.”

El CNMC té la seu a Ottawa i és la principal entitat de defensa dels drets civils dels musulmans al Canadà. Actua com a interlocutor davant el govern federal en matèria de discriminació, racisme i llibertat religiosa.

Els musulmans del Quebec denuncien la publicació de les imatges

El portaveu del CNMC al Quebec, Yasser Lahlou, ha confirmat que han reportat les publicacions a Meta (Facebook) i que també ha traslladat el cas a les autoritats competents per incitació a l’odi. El Centre Cultural Islàmic de Quebec (CCIQ) s’ha unit a la denúncia i ha emès un comunicat contundent: “Condemnem qualsevol intent de dividir els ciutadans i d’alimentar l’odi contra la comunitat musulmana.

Lahlou també ha criticat la passivitat de les institucions públiques davant d’aquest tipus de contingut: “És paradoxal: les plataformes diuen que no poden fer res, i el govern calla. Mentrestant, les dones musulmanes tornen a ser el blanc del rebuig i la burla.” Des del CNMC, l’organització demana que la província adopti mecanismes legals més clars contra els discursos d’odi en línia, especialment quan aquests se centren en minories religioses.

El niqab divideix el feminisme i la laïcitat al Quebec

Per als crítics del niqab, les declaracions de Stephen Brown representen una banalització d’un símbol de submissió femenina i la normalització d’una pràctica que consideren incompatible amb la igualtat de gènere. Diverses organitzacions feministes al Quebec argumenten que, en defensar el niqab com una simple opció personal, Brown “redueix l’espai de debat sobre la llibertat de les dones i visibilitat del patriarcat religiós”.

Tant el partit de govern , Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), com l’oposició independentista del Parti Québécois (PQ) coincideixen en el rebuig a l’islamisme i en la defensa d’una laïcitat estricta a les institucions públiques. Malgrat les seves diferències sobre la sobirania, tots dos partits comparteixen la idea que el vel integral com el niqab és incompatible amb els valors d’igualtat i neutralitat religiosa que, segons ells, han de guiar la societat quebequesa.

En canvi, el partit d’esquerra independentista Québec Solidaire (QS) ha adoptat una actitud molt més oberta cap a l’ús del vel i el niqab. Com moltes esquerres, argumenten que forma part de la llibertat individual i del dret a la diversitat cultural. Aquesta postura ha estat criticada per sectors feministes i laics, que hi veuen una contradicció amb els valors progressistes que el partit diu defensar. El debat es va intensificar arran d’un episodi recent: una activista feminista iraniana va assistir amb niqab a una reunió de Québec Solidaire i va ser rebuda amb somriures i gestos de complicitat. L’escena va generar perplexitat per ser un exemple clar de com part de l’esquerra quebequesa ha acabat normalitzant símbols de submissió femenina en nom de la tolerància.
