NTV reports that, for the second time, the President of Syria did not shake hands with the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock. Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani) in January shook hands with the men but not the woman. Annalena Baerbock, of the Green Party, returned to visit him and the snub was repeated.
European support for Syrian Islamism
During her stay in Damascus, Baerbock met with members of the transitional government and representatives of civil society.
Despite the recent violence in the country, with more than 1,500 murders by government supporters, Baerbock has reaffirmed Germany's support with humanitarian aid and possible sanctions relief. She has also called for accountability for the crimes of the previous regime and urged the new government to continue the fight against extremism and to drive the country's reconstruction.
