EThe United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) promoted a campaign called “NHS Ramadan Challenge.”, in which healthcare staff—Muslim or not—were invited to fast. The idea was to show “Alliances, gratitude and experiencing what the less fortunate go through.”According to Chris Hopson, the NHS's director of strategy and driving force behind the initiative. The information was made public by the British media outlet." Good morning. In the text circulated, it was recommended to fast for «to understand and experience how Muslims feel«.
The proposal was accompanied by an institutional poster. circulated among healthcare staff, and was concluded with a message from Hopson at the Eid Al-Fitr event, which marked the end of Ramadan, in the presence of various NHS authorities.
The Muslim Network of the NHS
This campaign arises from the NHS Muslim Network, one of the multiple internal networks that the health organisation allows, with the aim of supporting specific groups within the workforce. In this case, The Network seeks to “celebrate and defend the contribution of Muslims to the NHS” and “combat Islamophobia”, according to its founding documents.
Hopson is its executive sponsor — each network must have a senior figure as a point of reference — and he congratulated the Network on its growth and on “bringing in allies”, that is, non-Muslim staff who are actively involved.
This Network, managed with “protected time” (assigned working hours), has published materials such as:
- Guides for new converts to Islam.
- “New to the hijab.
- “How to be a better Muslim.
- Guidelines for non-Muslim colleagues on practising “the alliance.”.
Financing of Islam and healthcare collapse
The scandal has grown with the revelation that these initiatives have received at least some public funding, according to confirmation from the British Department of Health. Meanwhile, the health system is going through a deep crisis: by December 2024 there were almost 7.5 million people on the waiting list, with more than three million having been waiting for over 18 weeks.
In the face of controversy, NHS England argued that it is “completely reasonable” for workers to take part in Ramadan. if they want, and stated that it is necessary to make all staff feel included in a diverse society.
